Design in 2026: less noise, more intent
Every January brings a fresh wave of trend decks, but only a few shifts actually change how teams work. Here are the five we are designing around right now.
1. Quiet interfaces
Teams are stripping chrome in favour of content. Fewer cards, fewer borders, more whitespace doing the heavy lifting — and measurably better task completion as a result.
2. Expressive typography
With quieter layouts, type carries the personality. We are seeing bigger contrast between display and body faces, and more brands commissioning custom cuts of their headline fonts.
3. Motion with a job
Decoration is out; motion that explains state and hierarchy is in. Every animation now has to earn its milliseconds — and respect reduced-motion preferences.
4. Local-first colour
Palette choices are getting braver and more contextual: colours drawn from the actual places and materials a brand works with, rather than whatever won an award last year.
5. Design systems that shrink
The giant component libraries of 2021 are being pruned hard. Teams keep the 40 components they use daily and delete the rest — faster builds, fewer decisions.
